Short answer

Most insulation contractors should plan to spend 5% to 10% of revenue on marketing: about 5% to hold your ground, 10% to grow. For a $1M company, that is roughly $4,200 to $8,300 a month, all in. In our published insulation case studies, ad spend alone ran from $456 for a first month to about $2,500 a month, before management fees and tools.

What "marketing cost" actually includes

When an insulation owner asks what marketing costs, the answer has four parts. Agencies often quote only one of them, which is why budgets blow up.

Cost bucket

What it covers

Paid to

Typical range (public data)

Ad spend

Money that goes to Meta, Google, Local Services Ads

The platform, directly

$1,000+ a month to start; $5,000+ in competitive markets (Hook Agency, 2026)

Management or agency fee

Strategy, ads, creative, optimization, reporting

The agency or freelancer

$500 to $2,500 a month for Google Ads management; $2,500 to $10,000 a month for a full-service retainer (Hook Agency, 2026). Percentage models usually run 10% to 20% of ad spend (OuterBox, 2026)

Tools

CRM, call tracking, texting, review requests

Software vendors

$200 to $600 a month (Hook Agency, 2026)

Website and landing pages

Site build, funnel pages, hosting

Designer or agency

From $3,000 to $5,000 for a basic template build (Hook Agency, 2026)

Two rules make the table easier to use:

  • Ad spend and management fees are separate. A "$1,500 a month" quote that includes ad spend leaves very little for the ads. Ask which one the number is.
  • Tools are small but they are where leads are won or lost. A $300 a month CRM that texts every lead in a minute does more for your booking rate than another $1,000 in ads.

Insulation marketing budget by revenue stage

The most common rules of thumb all point to the same range:

  • The U.S. Small Business Administration guidance, as reported by the Houston Chronicle, is 7% to 8% of gross revenue for businesses under $5M in sales with 10% to 12% net margins.
  • Matt Michel of the Service Roundtable describes 5% as maintenance, 10% to grow market share and 20% for rapid growth.
  • In the Remodeling 550 survey, the largest replacement contractors spent about 10% of revenue on marketing, with 42% of them between 6% and 15%.

Here is what those percentages mean in dollars. These are simple calculations, not quotes.

Annual revenue

5% (maintain) per month

7.5% (SBA middle) per month

10% (grow) per month

Where the money usually goes

$250,000 (owner-operator, 1 crew)

about $1,040

about $1,560

about $2,080

One ad channel (usually Meta), a CRM, Google Business Profile. No full-service retainer yet

$500,000 (2 crews)

about $2,080

about $3,130

about $4,170

Meta ads plus a management fee, CRM with automatic follow-up

$1,000,000 (3 to 5 crews)

about $4,170

about $6,250

about $8,330

Meta and Google Search, a dedicated person or agency, call tracking

$3,000,000 (multi-crew, office staff)

about $12,500

about $18,750

about $25,000

Several channels, SEO, a sales team working leads, seasonal pushes

$5,000,000+ (multi-location)

about $20,800+

about $31,250+

about $41,700+

Full mix by location, brand, retention and referral programs

How to pick your column:

  1. Booked out for 6+ weeks? Stay near 5%. Spend on follow-up and reviews, not more ads.
  2. Crews idle, or you want to add a crew this year? Plan for 10% for at least 6 months.
  3. New company or new territory? Budget in dollars, not percentages. Your revenue is too small for 10% to buy enough leads. Start with what it takes to fill one crew (see the math below).

How much ad spend does it take to fill one crew?

Work backwards from the jobs you need, using your own numbers. Here is the math with figures from our published insulation case studies:

Step

Example

Where the number comes from

Average job value

$4,150 to $4,370

Masterseal Insulation and Qute Insulation

Cost per lead (Meta)

about $35

Most of our accounts land between $30 and $37 (full table)

Booking rate (lead to estimate)

about 33% to 54%

Metro, Qute, Masterseal case studies

Ad spend per signed job

about $455 to $1,450

Table below

If you need 10 extra jobs a month and each signed job costs you about $1,000 in ads, your ad budget is about $10,000 a month. If 10 jobs is more than your crews can install, scale the budget down to your install capacity. Spending past your capacity only raises your cost per job.

Ad spend only. Management fees and tools are not included, so the full cost is higher than these figures.

Metro's ad spend is calculated from its published cost per lead ($29.57) and lead count (170). Ad spend per signed job is ad spend divided by signed jobs.

What these numbers say:

  • Monthly ad spend in these accounts sat between about $450 and $2,500. That is a realistic starting range for a residential insulation company testing paid ads.
  • Revenue in the first 60 days understates the result. Masterseal reported about $55,000 and Qute about $110,000 of estimated pipeline on top of signed revenue. Insulation estimates often close weeks after the first visit.
  • Closing rate is the biggest swing factor. Metro reported a 14% closing rate, Masterseal and Qute about 7%. Same kind of ads, very different cost per job.

What changes your marketing cost in 2026

Factor

Effect on cost

What to do

Season

Demand rises with heating and cooling bills; spring is usually slower

Put more of the year's budget into fall and winter, keep a smaller budget running in the off season

Federal tax credit

The 25C energy efficient home improvement credit (up to $1,200 a year for insulation and air sealing) ended for work placed in service after December 31, 2025 (Building Performance Association)

Stop leading U.S. ads with the federal credit. Lead with bill savings, comfort, and any state or utility rebates still active in your area

Offer

A concrete offer (free attic inspection, rebate check) brings cheaper leads than "quality insulation services"

Test 2 or 3 offers before raising the budget

Follow-up speed

Slow follow-up lowers booking rate, which raises cost per job even when cost per lead looks fine

Text or call every lead within minutes, automatically

Market size and competition

Big metro areas have more competition on Google

Use Meta to reach homeowners before they search; use Google for the ones already searching

Job type

Spray foam tickets are larger than blown-in or batts, so a higher cost per job still works

Set your target cost per job from your average ticket, not from a universal number

Often included in the CRM

You do not need all of it on day one. A Google Business Profile, a CRM that answers leads fast, and one ad channel cover most companies under $500,000 in revenue.

How to avoid overpaying

  1. Ask for the split: ad spend, management fee, tools, setup. In writing.
  2. Judge results on cost per signed job, not cost per lead or clicks. Track leads, estimates and jobs in your CRM, not only in the ad platform.
  3. Give a channel 60 to 90 days before judging it. Insulation estimates close slowly; the first month mostly fills the pipeline.
  4. Own your ad accounts, your pages and your data. If you leave an agency, you keep your history.
  5. Start where you can install. Budget for the jobs your crews can handle this season, then scale.

FAQ

How much should an insulation company spend on marketing?

Plan for 5% to 10% of revenue. Around 5% keeps your current volume, around 10% grows it. New companies should budget in dollars instead: enough ad spend to fill one crew. In our published case studies, that ran from about $450 to $2,500 a month to start.

How much do insulation contractors spend on Facebook ads?

In our published insulation case studies, monthly Meta ad spend ran from about $450 to $2,500, with leads costing about $30 to $37 in most accounts. That figure is ad spend only; management fees are separate.

What do marketing agencies charge insulation contractors?

Public 2026 ranges put Google Ads management at $500 to $2,500 a month and full-service retainers at $2,500 to $10,000 a month, with percentage models usually at 10% to 20% of ad spend. Always ask whether a quote includes ad spend.

Is the 25C tax credit still available for insulation in 2026?

No, not for work completed after December 31, 2025. Check state programs and utility rebates in your area, and update any ads or landing pages that still promise the federal credit.

How long before marketing pays for itself?

Leads usually start within days on paid ads, but insulation estimates take weeks to close. In our case studies, accounts reported signed revenue within 1 to 2.5 months and a larger estimated pipeline still open. Judge the first 90 days, not the first 2 weeks.

Is it cheaper to do marketing in-house?

Running ads yourself saves the management fee but costs your time, and mistakes in targeting or follow-up cost more than the fee. A common middle path: keep the CRM and follow-up in-house, and hire out the ads and creative.
