Can insulation contractors run Google Local Services Ads in 2026? Where the category is open, what leads cost, how verification works, and if it pays.

As of October 2026, Google lists "Home insulation" as a Local Services Ads category in the United States only in California and Florida, and not at all in Canada. If you are in one of those two states, LSA is worth testing: you pay per lead, not per click, and public benchmarks put LSA leads for home services around $39 to $57 each. Everywhere else, insulation contractors need Google Search ads, Meta ads and a strong Google Business Profile instead.
Local Services Ads (LSA) are the ads with the "Google Verified" badge that appear above the regular Google ads for searches like "plumber near me". You pay when a homeowner calls, messages or books you through the ad, not when they click.
The catch is that Google only opens LSA to specific business categories, and the list changes by country. Here is what Google's own "Getting started" pages showed on October 21, 2026:
Country | Insulation category | Restrictions | Related categories that are open |
|---|---|---|---|
United States | "Home insulation" | California and Florida only | HVAC, roofers, general contractor, handyman, siding, solar energy contractor, window repair, and more |
Canada | Not listed | Not available | HVAC, roofers, plumbers, electricians, water damage, window repair, and others |
What this means for you:
Google has added categories several times, most recently with an expanded list reported in August 2026. Check the official page for your country before you decide, and check again every few months.
There is no public LSA cost benchmark for insulation yet, because the category is so limited. The closest public data is for other home services.
SearchLight Digital analyzed 888 contractors, 1,774 LSA campaigns and 126,650 leads in February 2026:
Category | Cost per lead (Feb. 2026) |
|---|---|
Electrical | $39 |
HVAC | $51 |
General / all trades | $54 |
Plumbing | $57 |
All categories blended | $53 |
Three more numbers from the same study help put this in context:
How does that compare with other channels?
Channel | Public or published cost per lead | Source |
|---|---|---|
Google Local Services Ads (home services, blended) | $53 | SearchLight Digital, Feb. 2026 |
Google Search ads (home and home improvement, average) | $90.92 | WordStream / LocaliQ 2026 benchmarks, cited by Ryn Digital |
Meta ads for insulation (our published accounts) | $29.57 to $52.49 | Growth Partner case studies, full table |
LSA is often cheaper per lead than Google Search ads for home services. For insulation, Meta ads have produced leads in the $30s in most of our published accounts, for example Metro Insulation at $29.57 and Masterseal Insulation at $37. The difference is intent: an LSA lead is searching for help right now, while a Meta lead is a homeowner you reached before they searched.
Google's Local Services Help pages define a charged lead this way:
Charged | Not charged |
|---|---|
A phone call you answer, or a call back where you speak to the customer | Leads Google judges invalid or low quality when first assessed |
A text message or email from the customer | Repeat contact from the same customer within 15 days |
A voicemail | A caller who hangs up at your phone menu without pressing a key |
A booking request (U.S. and Canada) |
Google reviews charged leads over 30 days and automatically credits leads it judges poor quality, duplicate or invalid. You can also report a specific lead through the feedback survey on that lead.
Many guides still talk about the green "Google Guaranteed" badge. Google has since moved to a single "Google Verified" badge for all Local Services advertisers. Google also discontinued the Money Back Guarantee that came with the old badge: homeowners can still request reimbursement only for services booked through LSA before December 7, 2025, within 30 days of the service date.
If your website, ads or sales scripts still promise "Google Guaranteed" protection, update them.
Pre-badge ads: Google now lets some businesses receive LSA leads after passing preliminary checks while they finish the rest of onboarding. Requirements include acknowledging your business licenses, meeting the category's review requirements, and completing billing. You must finish all onboarding steps to get the Google Verified badge.
Google's "About ad rankings" page lists the factors it uses:
In practice, the two levers you control every day are answering fast and collecting reviews. Our guide on how to get insulation leads covers how to set up a follow-up system that answers every lead in minutes.
Your situation | Our take |
|---|---|
California or Florida, office answers calls all day, 20+ good Google reviews | Worth testing. Run it alongside Meta or Search ads for 60 to 90 days and compare cost per signed job |
California or Florida, few reviews or calls go to voicemail | Fix reviews and call handling first. LSA rewards responsiveness and penalizes missed calls |
Other U.S. states | Not available for insulation today. Use Google Search ads for homeowners already searching and Meta ads to reach them before they search |
Canada | Not available for insulation. Same plan: Search, Meta and your Google Business Profile |
Also licensed in HVAC, roofing or another listed category | You can run LSA in that category for those services, but the leads will be for those services, not insulation |
Judge LSA on cost per signed job, not cost per lead. A $53 lead that books 44% of the time and closes like your best channel is cheap. The same lead is expensive if nobody calls it back.
Our published insulation case studies are all Meta ads, not LSA. We are saying that plainly so you can weigh the evidence. They show what a lead flow looks like once it is running, and what happens when follow-up is in place:
Account | Period | Leads | Cost per lead | Booked estimates | Booking rate |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
first few weeks | 48 | $36.06 | 19 | 39.58% | |
2 months | 170 | $29.57 | 56 | 32.94% | |
2.5 months | 84 | $36 | 29 | 40.28% |
If you are in California or Florida, LSA can sit next to a channel like this. If you are anywhere else, a channel like this is what replaces it. We manage both: see our Google Local Services Ads management and Facebook ads management pages, or run your numbers with the cost per lead calculator. To find out which mix fits your market, book a call.
In the U.S., yes, but only in California and Florida, under the "Home insulation" category as of October 2026. Insulation is not an LSA category in Canada. Check Google's official "Getting started" page for your country, since the list changes.
No. Google replaced its badges with a single Google Verified badge and discontinued the Money Back Guarantee. Reimbursement requests only apply to services booked through LSA before December 7, 2025.
There is no public insulation benchmark yet. For other home services, SearchLight Digital measured $39 to $57 per lead by category in February 2026, with a blended average of $53. Expect higher costs in large metro areas.
Google reviews charged leads over 30 days and automatically credits leads it judges poor quality, duplicate or invalid. You can also report a lead through its feedback survey. Industry data suggests credits average about 6% to 7% of spend.
Google says screening averages three to four weeks after you submit your documents. Pre-badge ads can let some businesses receive leads before the badge is complete.
Reviews are part of the requirements for pre-badge ads, and Google uses your rating and review count to rank your ad. Google does not publish a minimum number, so collect as many genuine reviews as you can before launch.
